Al Sharpton: Is this leadership necessary for change?
Leadership is necessary for driving forces that fight civil rights issues. It is important to know whether or not the leadership is actually helping and making the change necessary for the community. African-Americans are condemned by a system based on institutional racism where they face racial profiling and stereotyping, which leads to cases of police brutality and also is the result of criminalization in the media. Many African-Americans reside in inner cities where they are placed in schools with little resources and limited funding by the government. Many people have questioned if the prominent civil rights leaders of today fit the leadership needed for the black community due to the fact that many of the issues faced by African-Americans are not addressed. This has led to an outcry for the need of new leadership to help in the effort against civil right issues for African Americans because the civil rights leaders of today do not make a positive difference within the black community (Carnell para. 11).
